IntroductionThis is a quick list of some of the best self-help legal materials available in the Law Library and on the internet. Many of the print publications are from Nolo Press. A keyword search in MNCAT for "Nolo" is a good way to find new titles as they arrive. You can also do a keyword search on your topic and the phrase "popular works." Web Resources (Minnesota)The LawHelpMN website provides contact information and links to legal aid offices and other local community organizations.http://www.lawhelpmn.org The Minnesota Attorney General's Office website provides a number of consumer rights publications and information covering various popular legal issues such as buying a car, avoiding fraud, getting quality health care, knowing your rights as a landlord or tenant, investigating charities and dealing with the utilities. There is a special section for senior citizens and a downloadable consumer complaint form. The Minnesota Legal Services
Coalition is an association of regional legal services programs that
help low-income people with a broad range of civil legal matters. Their website
provides information on getting help from a legal services office and on topics
such as: child protection, domestic abuse, health care, housing, immigrants and
public benefits. The Coalition publishes free Community Education Booklets on
these and other subjects, and several are available in Spanish. You can also
find information here on the Minnesota Disability Law Center and the Farm Law
Project. The Minnesota State Bar
Association publishes online pamphlets in its Consumer Information and
Frequently Asked Questions section, which also contains guidelines on how to
file a complaint if you believe your lawyer has acted unprofessionally. The
association provides information on selecting a lawyer through its Lawyer Referral System. The Minnesota Judicial Branch provides court forms in fillable PDF format for specific legal problems. University Student Legal
Services provides legal representation and legal advice to eligible
students on the Twin Cities campus. USLS also publishes brochures on credit
reporting, debt collection, custody, drunk driving, misdemeanors, court
locations, as well as a Tenant Resource Guide. These brochures can be picked up
at the USLS office (160 West Bank Skyway, 219 19th Ave S, Minneapolis campus).
