Fredrikson & Byron Library Lobby

The library lobby is on the plaza (1st) floor of the building, to the left of the main entrance of the building. This lobby permits 24 hours access to the library book drop and photocopiers and to a study area on the 2nd floor of the library. An elevator to the upper floors of the library is available from the lobby whenever the library is open.

Circulation Desk & Reserve Collection

The circulation desk is located just inside the entrance. It is staffed whenever the library is open. The circulation staff manages the reserve collection (including past exams), circulates library materials, handles the assignment of study rooms and carrels, and distributes cards for photocopying and the wireless network. A public workstation with access to the online catalog is also available at this desk.

Kaplan, Strangis & Kaplan Reference Center

The reference office is located next to the circulation desk near the entrance to the reading room. It is staffed 7 days a week during the academic year and Monday - Friday during the summer and inter-sessions. The reference staff is available to suggest information sources and research strategies and to explain how to use library materials, electronic resources, and equipment.

Harold M. & Rada N. Fredrikson Reading Room

The reading room on the first floor of the library houses current statutes, regulations, and cases from all U.S. jurisdictions. The library's extensive collections of microform materials (see below), looseleaf services, treatises and periodicals are housed on the first floor reading room. Public workstations with access to the online catalog are available near the entrance to the reading room.

Microform Collection

Among the materials included in the library's microform collection are: legal newspapers, court briefs, session laws, U.S. congressional and U.N. documents, the Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations. Microform reader/printers are provided.

Study areas on the plaza level are conveniently located in the stacks and at long tables near the libary's looseleaf services collection. All seating in the reading room is unassigned.

Room 153 - Computer Training Lab

Networked computer workstations and a training room for online research on this floor are available to University of Minnesota law students.

After Hours Access

University of Minnesota law students, faculty, and staff may access the library 24 hours, seven days a week.

The second floor houses collections of state, federal, and U.N. documents. Non-current federal statutes and codes and treatises covering philosophy, religion, history, and social science topics, and duplicate sets of first floor materials are also found here. Several study rooms are available to University of Minnesota law students. A public workstation with access to the online catalog is available inside the wooden doors. The Minnesota Law Review, Law and Inequality, and Minnesota Journal of Global Trade also have offices on this floor. After hours, University of Minnesota law students, faculty, and staff may enter the second floor by using their electronic key cards on the white door from the balcony area overlooking the circulation desk.

The balcony area is open 24 hours a day. It provides a casual reading area stocked with daily newspapers and popular news magazines. Photocopiers and unassigned study tables and carrels are also provided.

Stairway Access to 3rd & 4th Floors

On the second floor balcony there is a white door that opens on to a stairway to the library's third and fourth floors. After hours, University of Minnesota law students, faculty, and staff may access this stairway by using their electronic key cards.

Third Floor

The library's third floor contains works on state law, international and comparative law, human rights, and the law of the United Kingdom, Canada, Latin America, and the West Indies. Duplicate sets of first floor materials are also found here. Several study rooms for University of Minnesota law students and a photocopier and public workstation with access to the online catalog are available. The Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Review has its office on the third floor.

Fourth Floor & Computer Lab

 
The fourth floor of the library houses works on the law of foreign jurisdictions that are not found on the third floor, treatises covering education, science, medicine, and technology and duplicate sets of first floor materials. Several study rooms and a computer lab on the fourth floor are available to University of Minnesota law students. A photocopier is also provided on this floor. After hours, University of Minnesota law students, faculty, and staff may enter the computer lab by using their electronic key cards on the white door that leads into the lab.

Riesenfeld Rare Books Research Center 
The Riesenfeld Rare Books Research Center is located on the subplaza of Mondale Hall. The center provides an exhibit area and a secure area for the Law Library's special collections. For more information visit the Center's web page.
